Julia Popowitz

Julia is an advisor to start ups and an active technology angel investor, with angel investments in Gusto, Lever, Baobab Studios, Brit Media, BetterUp, SafeGraph, CodeFights, AltSchool, MissionU, Owlet, Philz Coffee, Tynker, Happiest Baby, Kite, MileIQ (acq by MSFT), Locu (acq by GoDaddy), Beme (acq by CNN), Alt12 (acq by Honest Co), Worklife (acq by Cisco) & Wheelz (acq by Turo), and later stage investments in Uber, Alibaba (IPO’d), FlipKart, Postmates, DocuSign, Survey Monkey, Blue Bottle Coffee, Stripe and Spotify.

Julia began her career as a corporate attorney at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich Rosati. In 2006, Julia joined Facebook as the second attorney in the legal department and led the commercial transactions team from June 2006 until April 2011. She negotiated numerous deals strategic to Facebook's growth and development, including with Microsoft, Spotify, ABC/Disney, CNN and YouTube. Julia led a team of 9 attorneys, oversaw Facebook's legal work related to its international expansion and operations, and worked on matters related to product and IP law. In her five years at Facebook, Julia was instrumental in scaling the legal team from two people to 40, setting up departmental procedures and infrastructure and hiring and managing outside counsel. 

Julia received her JD from Harvard Law School in 1997, graduating cum laude, and her BA from UC Berkeley, graduating magna cum laude and phi beta kappa with a degree in Political Science. She is a member of the State Bar of California.

In her free time, Julia volunteers at her kids' schools and with other community organizations. She has chaired the annual auctions at Bing Nursery School and Nueva School and is on the National Council of World Wildlife Fund. Previously, she sat on the boards of the Oshman Family JCC, Hebrew Free Loan Association and Hands on Bay Area. She biked from SF to LA with the California AIDS Ride and ran the Honolulu Marathon with Team in Training.
